Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1979, Julio Cesar made his professional debut with Flamengo in 1997 and stayed with the club for seven years, winning four Rio state titles in that time and becoming a firm favourite with the Rubro-negro faithful. In 2005, it was time for a change of scenery. The goalkeeper signed for Inter Milan, only to be loaned out to Chievo Verona, for whom he never played a game. On his return to the San Siro, he dislodged the highly regarded Francesco Toldo from the No1 slot and established himself as one of the world’s finest custodians.

His first international call-up came at the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup, where he was understudy to Dida. The following year he played an instrumental role in Brazil’s Copa America triumph, saving a penalty in the final against Argentina. A reserve keeper at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, he was first-choice for his country four years later in South Africa. Dropping out of the side after the 2011 Copa America, Julio Cesar returned to the fold in 2013, when Luiz Felipe Scolari recalled him after taking charge of the national team, regardless of his status in club football.

At the end of the 2011/12 campaign, the veteran GK left Inter for Queens Park Rangers. He had some ups and downs with the English club and, after a long period of inactivity, he moved to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.

Brazil paid a heavy price for their 2-1 quarter-final defeat of Colombia in Fortaleza on Friday, with star man Neymar suffering a fractured vertebra that will cause him to miss the rest of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

After being carried off in tears on a stretcher, Neymar was taken to the city’s Hospital Sao Carlos, where it was confirmed that his third vertebra had been broken. The news that neither his team nor his country wanted to hear was announced by the Brazil’s medical staff at the Estadio Castelao.

“Neymar had a scan, which confirmed he had fractured his third vertebra,” said Brazilian Football Association (CBF) doctor Rodrigo Lasmar. “In terms of the recovery process, it’s a fracture that heals quickly, but unfortunately he’ll be in no condition to play next week.”

Lasmar added: “It’s not serious in the sense that it requires surgery, but he’s in pain and he’ll need to immobilise it to recover. He’ll have to have it immobilised with a belt for a few weeks to be able to get back to full mobility.”

Neymar sustained the injury in the closing stages of the match, under a challenge from a Colombian defender. The sight of the stricken No10 being carried off and then taken to hospital for scans dampened the spirits of the Brazil fans as they celebrated their side’s qualification for the last four.

While the confirmation that Neymar’s tournament is over was greeted with dismay and sadness, his team-mates are already thinking about how to make up for his absence, Hulk among them. “It’s very sad news,” said the forward. “Nobody expected this.

“We are delighted with the win but sad about this news. It’s all very frustrating. Neymar really looks after himself. He was so excited about the World Cup and he’d helped us so much. We have to get over this and run even harder for him. We’re going to try and be the champions anyway and dedicate the title to him.”

Neymar has been one of A Seleção’s stand-out performers at the World Cup, scoring four goals, but will now have to watch from the sidelines when Brazil take on Germany in next Tuesday’s semi-final in Belo Horizonte.

Neymar fit to take on Colombia

Brazil star Neymar will be fit to face Colombia in Friday's FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final in Fortaleza, a spokesman for the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed today.

"It is not a problem for the game. He is undergoing treatment for a heavy knock to the [right] knee and another lesser knock to the [left] hamstring," CBF communications director, Rodrigo Paiva, told journalists at Brazil's training base in Teresopolis.

"It might reduce his involvement in training, but there is no risk for the game."

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari had raised some doubt as to Neymar's chances of playing against Colombia after he came out of Saturday's dramatic Round of 16 win against Chile in Belo Horizonte battered and bruised.

"We need to evaluate it but we should have three, four or five days to try and make sure he can play the next game," he said.

However, the Barcelona forward continued playing and scored a crucial penalty in the shootout, which the hosts won 3-2 to progress to the last eight.

Paiva added that centre-back David Luiz had "improved a lot" after back trouble initially put his involvement against Chile in some doubt, while midfielder Oscar was suffering from a "large scratch" to the back of a leg.

Midfielder Nigel de Jong is doubtful for the Netherlands' FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final after injuring a groin in the victory over Mexico on Sunday, coach Louis van Gaal said.

Van Gaal described the injury as a "big setback" as he plans for the Salvador quarter-final on Saturday. The AC Milan player came off the field after just nine minutes.

De Jong's return "will be difficult for the next match" Van Gaal told reporters after the 2-1 win took his side through to the last eight.
